More from Anne Tempel...

Although I wasn’t born and raised in Sedalia, my parents were! My grandmother, Marian Tempel, played the organ for Broadway Presbyterian Church for 50 years. She was a great source of support and inspiration to me, and in my mind and heart, she will eternally maintain her “seat” at the bench.

I have a degree in Music from the University of Kansas where I studied all kinds of things that I was interested in from carillon to Polish language, to Irish literature and culture. It was an enriching time for me, and an opportunity provided itself there for me to study abroad in both the Czech Republic and in Spain. I later received an undergraduate research award in the form of a grant, which I used to go back to the Czech Republic and dig for old musical manuscripts in the National Library of Prague. I found four arias by Jakub Jan Ryba, a Czech contemporary of Mozart, and brought them back to transcribe and premier during my final
days as a music student at KU. I also traveled Europe with the Traveling Carillon of Prague, on the back of a Renault trailer truck!

After music school, I drove a city and paratransit bus! I scored a CDL license in two weeks and met a lot of interesting people and pets. I enrolled in a trade school around this time, and after graduating I left for New York City to do a year-long service contract with AmeriCorps. After being an AmeriCorps member working in the environmental field, I was then hired to work for the New York City Parks Department as an Urban Park Ranger. Ask me for stories!

I left for China in 2007-2008 and stayed for a few years teaching English in Manchuria. Boredom and repetition set in, so I decided to put Earthship Biotecture on the map by orchestrating and building the first Earthship in China. I came home shortly after, and started working for Earthship Biotecture in Taos, New Mexico in 2011. While there, I spent time as a builder, project organizer, and joined the roller derby.

My son was born in 2013. I realized I needed to do something different, yet again, so I went back to school at State Fair Community College and prepared to enter the medical field. Though it took a long time for me to “begin again,” I was admitted to Yale University for physician assistant studies, and after graduating decided to supplement with another graduate degree in Public Health from The George Washington University. When you have a child with special needs, your life path is not always linear, so I entered the school district to try my hand at teaching elementary music for a year. I now teach orchestral strings in Marshall, Missouri as an orchestra assistant working part-time and have more time available for my son.

At some point, I will return to the clinic, but for right now I am enjoying a lot of music in my life! I am currently involved as a musician in the Jefferson City Symphony (violin), the Olathe Community Orchestra (violin), and the American Legion Band of Greater Kansas City (flute/piccolo). It is a special moment in time for me to get the opportunity to play music for Broadway
Presbyterian Church, and I look forward to playing and singing with all the other wonderful musicians here!
