Three-Parent Babies

The United States stopped it from taking place here in 2002. But in New Jersey, 15 years ago, 17 babies were born via an In Vitro Fertilization process that included three parents. The procedure involves taking eggs from two women and injecting cytoplasm and mitochondria from the donor egg into the mother’s egg so that the baby inherits genetic material from three individuals. Such engineered babies are created so that mitochondrial diseases in the mother are not passed on to her children.

The 17 babies, now teenagers, are currently being sought for follow-up study as a British clinic plans to activate further IVF three-parent procedures and Parliament considers regulations or an outright ban.

How should elected officials or, more importantly, all us sort through our compassion toward those struggling with conception, and galloping scientific efforts that often race forward before we have given them adequate thought? Should science have an unlimited avenue for genetically engineering children? Where do we draw a line, because we can be sure that scientific advances will go far beyond just cytoplasmic transfer and mitochondrial donation. What is the ethical limit? What is the biological limit? What is the Christian limit?

I realize that there is a great biological need to have children of our own. But people who adopt children can quickly attest that there is no difference once the child is in hand. Love is love. If we deemphasized the preeminence of blood relation, this kind of weird science would not be necessary. There are plenty of children desperate for loving parents. Why not reach out to those babies and children before such tampering with nature?

Great reminder about adoption and the reality of love! And on the issue of blood, Abraham Lincoln said he was less concerned about who his grandfather was and more concerned "to know what his grandson will be."

I agree completely with you Rob and Kim. There are so many children needing a loving home with loving parents. As the mother of a wonderful adopted son. It is true love is love.

So right on. Adoptive parents are able to speak of things that others may find hard to understand. And it is also true that so many adopted children have no interest in their biological parents. Their parents and their family IS their family.

Then again, of course, adoption is not for everyone, which still leaves us with the challenge of what is and is not appropriate in scientific engineering.

Actually, this is a really hard one. I struggled similarly with human embryo research. Science can, and will continue, to do amazing things, but can and should are different things. I guess I draw the line on what is intended in creation. Humans are born of the biological union of male and female DNA, not mixed parts of DNA from three or more people. Once we go down that road aren't we just manipulating what creation intended? It seems to me there is no line anymore as it relates to genetic manipulation and we will truly be designing people.
